How to read this
The same answer, worked through step by step with your numbers.
- 1
At the bank, ₹30,00,000 becomes $34,420
That is all an exchange rate tells you: 1 USD = 87.16 INR.
- 2
But everyday things cost 4.4× more in the United States
What ₹100 buys in India costs about $5.04 there. The bank gives you only $1.15 for it.
- 3
So the same lifestyle needs $151,218
That is the PPP figure: the pay that buys the same food, rent, transport and services there.

PPP is a national average of everyday prices. Big cities cost more than the average, and rent, tax, healthcare and schooling vary widely, so treat this as a starting point for negotiation rather than a precise figure.

PPP questions
Plain answers about comparing pay between countries, based on World Bank data.
What is a PPP salary calculator?
It converts a salary from one country to another by what the money buys rather than by the bank exchange rate. Purchasing power parity (PPP) compares the price of the same basket of everyday goods and services in two countries, so it tells you the salary you would need abroad to keep the lifestyle you have now.
How is PPP different from the exchange rate?
The exchange rate is what a bank gives you when you move money. PPP is what your money buys locally. In 2025, one US dollar bought about ₹87 at the bank, but only about ₹20 of Indian goods and services bought what one dollar buys in the US. So India's everyday prices are roughly a quarter of America's.
What salary in the US equals ₹30 lakh in India?
By purchasing power, about $151,218 a year, against only $34,420 at the bank rate. That gap is the difference in everyday prices: the same food, rent, transport and services cost several times more in the US. Money you save and bring home is the exception, since it converts back at the bank rate.
Does it include tax?
No. PPP compares prices, not taxes, and tax systems differ too much to fold into one number. Compare salaries before tax here, then work out take-home pay separately for each country. For India, the in-hand salary calculator on this site does that.
How accurate is PPP for comparing salaries?
It is a sound starting point, not a precise figure. PPP is a national average: big cities like Mumbai, London or San Francisco cost far more than their national average, and rent, healthcare and schooling vary widely. Use it to sanity-check an offer and to negotiate, then check the rent and costs for the specific city.
Where does the data come from?
PPP conversion factors for private consumption and yearly average exchange rates come from the World Bank's World Development Indicators (release 2026-07-13). The bank rate shown in the calculator is refreshed with current market rates where available, and you can type your own.
